Solar eclipse
============================
A terrestrial solar eclipse is an astronomical event in which the sun is partially or completely obscured by the moon as seen from certain areas of the earth. The shadow of the moon passes over the earth, which is only possible during a new moon. The sun and moon appear to an observer on earth with approximately the same apparent diameter, which is why the moon can sometimes completely and even precisely cover the sun's disk if you are close to the direct line connecting the centers of the sun and moon. This is caused by the extraordinary coincidence that the Moon is currently both about 375 times smaller and 375 times closer than the Sun. However, the track of the moon's umbra that falls on the earth during such a total solar eclipse is at most a few hundred kilometers wide. In contrast, the penumbra of the moon measures several thousand kilometers, so that a partial eclipse of the sun can be observed from more than a quarter of the earth's surface.

For a solar eclipse to occur, the sun, moon and earth must be in line. As the moon's orbit is inclined by around 5° to the ecliptic plane, this does not occur every time there is a new moon, but only when the moon is close to one of the two intersections of the moon's orbit and the ecliptic plane. During many central eclipses, the apparent diameter of the moon can be sufficient to completely cover the sun so that a total solar eclipse can be observed. As the Earth's orbit around the Sun, like that of the Moon around the Earth, is slightly elliptical, the distances from the Sun and Moon to the Earth are variable. It can therefore happen that the moon's disk is too small relative to the sun's disk to cover it completely. In this case, a thin ring of the sun's disk can remain visible around the moon in an annular solar eclipse. If the moon's umbra does not pass over an observer on earth, but rather its penumbra, this is referred to as a partial solar eclipse..
